Logograms and syllabograms

A logogram writes a word or meaningful element; a syllabogram writes a syllabic sound sequence. A logosyllabary uses both. The same language can be written with a word sign in one context and a sequence of sound signs in another. Sumerian and Akkadian cuneiform, Egyptian hieroglyphs and Maya writing all combine functions, although each does so in its own way. A pictorial appearance is no proof that a sign means the object pictured.

The Unicode typology calls Han a logosyllabary, but it cautions that a Han character is not necessarily an entire word. Modern Chinese often writes words with two or more characters. A character may have a reading and meaning in a particular language, while the same written character may be used in another language with a different reading. “Ideogram” encourages the mistaken idea that readers bypass language and receive pure concepts from the shapes.

Function belongs to an occurrence

In a cuneiform sign list, one sign may have multiple syllabic values and word uses. In Maya writing, the Smithsonian explains that inscriptions combine whole-word signs and syllabic signs. To classify a particular sign, look at its neighbors, repetition in known words, and the edition’s sign-by-sign analysis. A chart of possible values is a menu of hypotheses, not an answer to every occurrence.

A classifier or determinative supplies semantic guidance without necessarily being pronounced as part of the word. Such signs make it especially dangerous to pronounce an entire line of sign names. The spelling can contain linguistic clues and unspoken graphic cues at once.

Diagnosis

If a sign is consistently used for a whole word but a text elsewhere writes the same word with sound signs, the evidence supports mixed writing. If a sign appears next to words of one semantic class and is normally excluded from the word’s reading, investigate a determinative. These are provisional tests. The final reading needs a documented corpus and a language-specific account.

Evidence and comparison

Modern-language examples on this page clarify a linguistic pattern. They do not establish unattested sounds or forms for an ancient language. Follow the cited sources below and keep editorial readings separate from the surviving trace.
