The Tolkāppiyam
The Tolkāppiyam is the earliest extant major Tamil grammatical work. Its composition date remains disputed, so an exact year would falsely settle a scholarly question. It comes to readers through a long commentarial and manuscript history. The three main divisions are Eḻuttatikāram, Collatikāram and Poruḷatikāram: broadly, sounds and letters, words and their arrangements, and the conventions of literary subject matter. Those English descriptions are guides, not exact replacements for the Tamil headings.
Tamil University’s discussion of differing sūtra totals among commentators is a reminder that even the division of a compact work can depend on a transmitted recension. Cite the commentator and edition when a lesson relies on a numbered rule.
Grammar includes literary convention
Poruḷ is not just “meaning” in the narrow modern sense. The section helps organize poetic situations, speakers and themes. A category in it can tell a poet or commentator how a scene belongs to a literary convention; it need not be a claim that every Tamil conversation followed that convention. This wider scope is a strength of the work, not an error for failing to look like a modern syntax textbook.
The Pondicherry Institute study distinguishes phonological, morphological and syntactic, and literary dimensions of the three divisions. Use that map to find the relevant part, then return to the Tamil term. Avoid projecting a Sanskrit category onto Tamil merely because both traditions use concise rules and later commentary.
A comparative reading
Select one claim about permissible sounds or one poetic category in a published translation. Record the Tamil heading, the translated rule, the commentator’s gloss if supplied, and one cited literary example. Say whether the example is a source text or a modern illustration. Compare the category with a modern linguistic term only after stating what the traditional category actually groups.
Practice: explain to a classmate why Poruḷatikāram belongs in a course on language analysis even though it discusses poetry. Your answer should name the kind of textual behavior it classifies and acknowledge that literary norms and everyday speech are different evidential domains.
Modern-language examples on this page clarify a linguistic pattern. They do not establish unattested sounds or forms for an ancient language. Follow the cited sources below and keep editorial readings separate from the surviving trace.
