Trace a proposed sense from headword through citation to the passage at hand.

PY Ub 1318 tablet from Pylos

Finding the entry

Start with the edition’s exact token, then propose a lemma. Search inflected or variant forms with the edition’s orthography in mind. Record how you reached the entry. Check dictionary date, coverage, abbreviation list and supplements. The Perseus copy of Liddell–Scott–Jones exposes its preface and reading aids; Oracc explains the citation form, guide translation, part of speech and corpus instances displayed by its glossary.

A guide translation or first English gloss is a navigation aid. It does not prove that the same English word fits every construction. A lexicon groups evidence by editorial judgement, and some cited passages may themselves have uncertain readings.

Testing the sense

Read the full entry around the proposed sense. Note construction, period, genre and a cited passage closest to your token. Open that passage when possible; check whether the occurrence is intact and whether the edition agrees with the lexicon’s quotation. Draft a contextual rendering and one alternative. Etymology may illuminate history, but does not choose a meaning for this sentence.

A lexical note has token and line, lemma, dictionary edition and exact sense location, comparable attestation, and reason for the rendering. If no cited usage is comparable, say so rather than forcing the nearest gloss.

Practice

In the Oracc Primer’s P348658 example, choose one clearly printed token. Follow it to an Oracc glossary entry if available, and record citation form and guide translation. Check a linked occurrence before writing a contextual English rendering. If no linked glossary entry is available, record that limit and repeat with another Primer text.

Evidence and comparison

Modern-language examples on this page clarify a linguistic pattern. They do not establish unattested sounds or forms for an ancient language. Follow the cited sources below and keep editorial readings separate from the surviving trace.
