Searching the collections
The directory below links to an institution or project’s own digital collection or manuscript access page. It spans regions and kinds of holding institution, but it cannot enumerate every manuscript library. Some portals provide full page images; others offer selected images or descriptions that lead to a request service. Search a shelfmark when known, then verify each item’s actual image coverage, physical holder, stable record link and reuse terms.
The directory groups a portal by its host or holding institution. Its country is not a claim about where every manuscript in it was made. A project may digitise objects that remain with partner custodians. The item record, not the directory entry, is the authority for provenance and rights.
Recording a useful result
For each item you consult, save the repository name, shelfmark, title or contents, support, folio or surface, date with its basis, persistent URL and rights statement. Note whether you inspected a physical object, a digital photograph, a microfilm surrogate or catalogue metadata. If the viewer uses image numbers, preserve the manuscript’s folio labels separately.
When a portal is unavailable or a record has no images, retain the catalogue citation and describe the access limit. A broken viewer is not evidence that the manuscript has disappeared. Collections and access terms change, so revisit the official item page before quoting or reusing images.
